Cancer Can't Stop This Ferret

Dogs bark.  Cows moo.  Cats meow.  Ferrets… dook.

And that’s how fourth-year Penn Vet student – and ferret enthusiast – Melissa Jones named one of her first ferrets, Dookie.  “The name came because the sound that ferrets make when they are excited is called a ‘dook,’” said Melissa.  “When we got him as a baby he was so vocal and crazy that we named him Dookie.”

But one night, Dookie, who is now three-years-old, wasn’t acting like his normal self. He’d lost all mobility in his hind legs, and was in excruciating pain. Read more here »

Lucky

March Madness at New Bolton Center

Little Lucky was a redhead with a limp. The fuzzy calf had been having problems with his left front leg since he was just two weeks old. After four weeks of treatment proved unsuccessful, his primary care vet, Dr. Maurene Currin, suggested that his owner consider taking the red Angus bull calf to New Bolton Center for further investigation. 

When Dr. Currin called New Bolton Center to find out about possible surgery, she learned that it was March Madness, and the costs to the owners, Mark Moxley and his family, would be greatly reduced. Read more here »

*New Name Sought for Special Species Section at Ryan-VHUP*

Attention ferret fiends, bunny buffs, lizard kings, avian aficionados and all other fans of furry, scaled or feathered non-canine and non-feline pets! We're looking to rename our "Special Species" section to more clearly reflect our areas of expertise and the types of patients we see...and we want your input!

Please email vetpr@vet.upenn.edu with your ideas for a great new section name. We'll stop collecting suggestions on Friday, June 3 and a new name will be revealed by mid-July.
