Recognizing Signs of GDV

Your dog is trying repeatedly to vomit but just can’t bring anything up. She won’t lie down. She’s restless.

These are just a few of the signs of gastric dilation and volvulus (GDV), a condition that is fatal if immediate veterinary intervention is not sought.

GDV, also called “torsion,” is when a dog’s stomach twists and enlarges, causing the blood supply to the stomach to be compromised. This twisting movement of the stomach causes blood vessels to also twist and tear, which can result in internal bleeding. In addition, blood flow to the stomach and intestines is stopped, causing a build-up of toxic products within the dog’s body, which can cause irregular heartbeat, bleeding and shock. Penn Vet's Got Milk

June was national dairy month and, yes, Penn Vet’s got milk.

The Marshak Dairy on the New Bolton Center campus is tucked out of the way: up the hill from the herd of semi-feral ponies, past the Poultry Diagnostic Lab, and around the corner from the Swine Research and Teaching Center.

Named in honor of Robert Marshak, Penn Vet’s ninth dean, the Marshak Dairy was literally a breath of fresh air when it was built in 1996. Its open design represents the first greenhouse construction in a Pennsylvania barn and was recognized by the Northeast Dairy Farm Beautification Program as a dairy of distinction in 1998. The natural lighting and excellent ventilation used throughout the main barn promote a healthy environment for the cows. Read more here »
