Winter is just about here. You sneeze. Your dog sneezes. You cough. Your dog coughs. Par for the course this time of year? Yes. And no.
For most of us, the common cold comes and goes and is little more than an annoyance. But our canine companions contract Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex (CIRDC) – also called “kennel cough” – and it can be very problematic. This time of year, when socializing with friends, two- and four-legged; going to the groomer for that pre-holiday spiffing up; spending extra time in day care; and staying at a boarding facility is at its peak, kennel cough is nothing to sneeze at. In the aftermath of a tragic barn fire, Neville heals and goes on to compete with the best.
When it comes to heart, Neville Bardos has about as much as one horse could. A three-day eventer, the 12-year-old, 16.1-hand chestnut gelding has had plenty of opportunity to show what he is made of: winner of Fair Hill International three-star in 2009; fourth place at Rolex CCI-four star in 2010; 10th place and the highest placing US horse at the 2010 World Equestrian Games.
But it wasn’t until last spring that the depth his courage and strength was known. Neville was rushed to New Bolton Center in the early hours of May 31, 2011 after being caught in a tragic barn fire at True Prospect Farm in West Grove, PA. He was reportedly the last horse to be rescued from the barn.
